 Greenshell Mussels

Fresh New Zealand Greenshell Mussels (Perna Canaliculus) are a native New Zealand Shellfish.  Found nowere else in the World, these jade shelled beauties are cultivated on longlines throughout the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds.   They are easily recognised by their vibrant green and gold shell colouring. The plump tender meat is creamy white when the mussel is male and apricot to orange when the mussel is female.   We challenge you to taste the difference..!!

 Finding Havelock

Havelock is a small seaport township and the gateway to the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds (Two of the main Sounds that make up the Marlborough Sounds.  The third Sound is the Queen Charlotte Sound out of Picton that many visitors get to see while travelling on the Interisland ferry).  Havelock is a great little township to explore with lots of arts and crafts, cafe and restaurants.

These days Havelock is known as the Greenshell Mussel Capital of the world.  There are more Greenshell Mussels brought in through this port than anywhere else. So what better place could there be to head to for a meal of fresh Mussels.!!

Self Drive (Your own car or campervan)

From Blenheim - follow the main highway from Blenheim through Renwick and onwards to Havelock.  The signage is very good so just look out for signs to Havelock or Nelson.  This scenic drive takes you through the wine region, the small township of Renwick and through the valleys to Havelock.  On arrival in Havelock take a right hand turn down to the Havelock Marina.  This drive will take you approximately 30 minutes.

From Picton - two very good options for this scenic drive.  First option is to take the Queen Charlotte Drive from Picton.  This is not a main highway and the road is fairly windy and narrow in places.  Its quite a slow road to drive but the stunning views are the reward with amazing views down the Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds. This scenic drive will take approximately 1 hour, but make sure you allow longer as the photo oppotunities are around every corner!!   The second option is to drive the main highway between Picton and Blenheim, turning off at Spring Creek and along Rapaura Road.  This drive will take you through the heart of the wine region and Rapaura Road is known locally as the golden mile of wine making. At the end of Rapaura Road you will rejoin state highway 6 for the drive through to Havelock.  Again travel time of approximatley 1 hour.

From Nelson - depart on state highway 6 and follow the road. There are no turn offs to make and the signage is good all the way. After leaving Nelson you will drive up though the Richmond ranges, through Rai Valley and into Havelock.  On reaching Havelock take a left turn down into the Havelock Marina.  This drive will take you approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.   An ideal self drive itienrary would be a check out of your Nelson accommodation at 10.00am, drive across to Havelock and have some time exploring the art and crafts of the township, then down to the waterfront for a nice lunch at the Slip Inn Cafe.  After lunch check in for the Greenshell Mussel Cruise at 1.15pm and spend the afternoon cruising the Marlborough Sounds.  At 4.30pm arrive back in the Marina and head through to the Marlborough wine region arriving at your accommodation around 5.00pm.

Require transport (Join a Tour)

The Marlborough Travel "Icons Tour" collects guests from Picton (9.30am) and Blenheim (10.00am) each morning over the Summer Season (Nov 1 - 31 March).  This tour heads out to experience some of Marlborough's Iconic wineries in the morning before heading through to Havelock for a nice lunch at the Slip Inn Cafe on the waterfront in the Havelock Marina.  Then join the Greenshell Mussel Cruise for the afternoon and get dropped back to your accommodation at the end of the day.   A fabulous full day out taking in the very best of Marlborough.
